Automat: Brunch done right

By , published on 25 March 2007

The Guide thinks that one of life’s great pleasures is a good brunch. And no one does brunch better than the people who invented the thing: the Americans.

True foodies know that there are few things better than a really good Bloody Mary, some perfectly cooked eggs and bacon; a smooth latte; freshly squeezed orange juice; or a perfect hamburger.

All of these Automat, the new(ish) American Brasserie in London’s Dover Street, does exceedingly well. In fact it comes pretty damn close to perfection on most of them.

And the decor is fantastic too. A perfect pastiche of smart, art-deco influenced Americana. Automat looks and feels the way you wish American diners really did. From its small, tile-lined dining room at the front, looking out onto Dover Street, through the ‘railway carriage’  complete with booths, to the airy, larger dining room cum kitchen at the rear, Automat has got ambience just about spot on. The service is friendly and efficient, the music timeless and laid back, and – on the day we visited – the place was buzzing with a nice mix of affluent-looking young locals, families, and some unsuspecting American tourists, no doubt wishing their local brasserie was as polished an operation as Automat.

Our editor-in-chief, the self-proclaimed "greatest wit, raconteur and bon vivant of our age", borders on delusional. Over the years, The Fool has squandered more money on fast cars, Swiss watches and electronic gadgetry of all kinds than he – or his bank manager – cares to remember. Come nightfall, he can invariably be found stumbling out of Dukes mumbling “just one more Martini; I could have handled just one mmmmm… [thud!]”
