There are many theories and opinions (and a few facts) within the world of musical reproduction, or high-fidelity. But The Guide is particularly mindful of one in particular: “Crap in, crap out.”
No, it’s not a particularly refined statement. Yet, it is more relevant than ever in this age of compressed digital files and the dominance of MP3 players in the home. Remember that we’re talking about high-fidelity here, as we believe that music deserves to have the largest and clearest window possible to our ears and souls.
“Crap in, crap out,” states the obvious and forces us to think twice before we spend more on our speakers or amplifier than we do on our source, be it a CD/DVD player, turntable, tuner, reel-to-reel or even a cassette deck (all hail the mighty Nakamichi Dragon of yore…)!
Whatever the resolution of your speakers, the processing power of your DAC or the transparency of your amplification, they are completely unable to reproduce what isn’t there to begin with. This is why you must always ensure that you spend more on your source than on any other component. Besides, you’ll always be able to upgrade the other parts of your hi-fi system later on, confident that you’ll be discovering ever-more of your quality source as you do.
