A phenomenal return to form for Maserati

By , published on 19 April 2008

When its predecessor, the Coupe, launched in 2002, it was an encouraging move in the right direction for a company that had seemingly lost it way. But the GranTurismo represents a giant leap forward; a seismic shift. And The Guide can make that assertion having never driven one. You don’t need to, just look at it: it’s absolutely gorgeous, everything an Italian grand tourer should be.

We’re quiet sure there are more sensible choices out there. A BMW 6-series will trounce the GranTurismo on build quality; a 911 will provide a far more satisfying drive. A DB9 would arguably just beat it on looks and heritage. But there’s something so right, so fitting, so Italian about this thing that we can’t help wonder if any of that would matter if we were standing in the showroom, cheque book in hand. Hard, very hard, to resist.

Head on over to Motor Trend for one of many glowing reviews.

Our editor-in-chief, the self-proclaimed "greatest wit, raconteur and bon vivant of our age", borders on delusional. Over the years, The Fool has squandered more money on fast cars, Swiss watches and electronic gadgetry of all kinds than he – or his bank manager – cares to remember. Come nightfall, he can invariably be found stumbling out of Dukes mumbling “just one more Martini; I could have handled just one mmmmm… [thud!]”
