Oh dear, oh dear…

This is the BMW 135i Coupe.

Jeremy Clarkson loves it – he went so far as to say that it’s the best car BMW currently makes – and indeed so do most other motoring journalists who have sampled it. They say it’s a great, back-to-basics, drive.

Well, we don’t care. And we don’t care for one very simple reason: this car is just plain ugly!

There’s no sense of proportion; the details are fussy; and it’s got a fat arse. These press photos are as good as it gets for the little mongrel. In the flesh, it looks even worse.

Back in the days when BMWs used to look as good as they drove, we would worship the Bavarian workhorses. Indeed, we’ve written before about how the previous generation M3 beat the 911 when it came to one of our editors putting down his own money for a car. And, Hell, we even looked optimistically on the CS concept, hoping that it would herald a return to good-looking BMWs. But the 135i shows that there is still a long, long way to go.

Oh dear.

Our editor-in-chief, the self-proclaimed "greatest wit, raconteur and bon vivant of our age", borders on delusional. Over the years, The Fool has squandered more money on fast cars, Swiss watches and electronic gadgetry of all kinds than he – or his bank manager – cares to remember. Come nightfall, he can invariably be found stumbling out of Dukes mumbling “just one more Martini; I could have handled just one mmmmm… [thud!]”
