Hunan: where the customer…eh…the owner is always right
By The Prodigal Fool, published on 5 January 2009
Rumour has it that a copy of the Hunan’s menu does exist. Somewhere. But The Guide has yet to meet anyone who’s actually seen it.
No, no, when dining at Hunan it’s really best not to concern yourself with anything as mundane as a menu. Far better to let Mr Peng take the lead. And take the lead he will.
What will follow is an endless – literally – procession of small dishes. Each as delicious as the next. They’re influenced by the cooking of Hunan & Taiwan, with signature choices including a hearty broth of minced pork, egg white, Chinese mushroom & ginger. This is sophisticated, sexy cooking. Every dish a new experience, every mouthful a genuine pleasure.
The glorious flavours of the food are matched by the excellent wine list which is carefully chosen and honestly priced. The Guide drank Cloudy Bay and was pleasantly surprised at how reasonably priced it was. We’ve seen it sold in far humbler restaurants for twice what we paid at Hunan.
The downside? Well, the seating is a little cramped and some of the staff are less than polite. But when the food’s this good, comments like that feel like nit-picking.
Trust Mr Peng, he knows what he’s doing.
