Sukho Thai Cuisine: sometimes the best is right under your nose

By , published on 31 January 2009

Sometimes we can take the things closest to us for granted. And that’s when feelings get hurt and relationships broken.

No, don’t worry, The Guide isn’t going all soft on you nor dishing out relationship advice. But this thought did occur to us on a recent visit to Sukho Thai Cuisine. We wanted to kiss and make up with the place. You see, we’re lucky enough to count this Fulham Thai restaurant amongst our locals and – perhaps because it our local – we’d never really given it the love and recognition it truly deserves.

Yes, we’d always known it was good, but the truth is that Sukho may be the best Thai food in London.

But before getting to the gushing, let’s get the negatives out of the way. Yes, it is very cramped; yes, the portions are small (don’t expect to get away ordering one main dish per person, you’ll need more – which of course will nudge your final bill ever upwards); and yes, the service - though always friendly and delivered with a smile - can be haphazard at times (on our last visit, the couple at the next table – who, because the tables are so cramped may as well have been our table, so The Guide took it rather personally – tried on three occasions without success to persuade the waiters to bring them a bottle of wine.)

Somehow though even the negatives are part of Sukho’s charm. And the reason that we happily put up with the cramped tables, the inconsistent service and the higher than average prices is that the food is utterly fantastic. It’s full of flavour, authenticity and interest. Dish after dish is brought to your table by the charming staff and just amazes you with its freshness and originality. You could throw darts at this menu to choose your dishes and be assured that you were going to have an excellent meal. We’ve sampled most of it over the years and, believe us, there are no duds.

If Sukho happens to be your local too, rejoice, and remember never to take your close ones for granted!  If not, make the pilgrimage to SW6. It’s worth the journey.

Come nightfall, he can invariably be found stumbling out of Dukes mumbling “just one more Martini; I could have handled just one mmmmm… [thud!]”

I agree. I’ve been to Sukho many times and have yet to have a bad meal there. Portions are a bit on the small side and it’s a bugger getting a table on a Friday night but it’s a great, great place.
