The Oscar results are in: how did we do?

By , published on 24 February 2009

Well, it’s a good thing that we have day jobs because The Guide certainly wouldn’t be able to make a living as award pundits. Yes, last Saturday we put it out on the line and made some Oscar predictions. So, how did we do?Actually, it could have been a lot worse. God knows, we’ve had more disastrous nights at the tables in Vegas….but that’s a whole other post.

So, let’s see:

Actor in a leading role

said that, in a Prodigal world, Mickey Rourke should win for his incredible comeback performance in The Wrestler. We predicted that the award would go to Brad Pitt though.

Result: A surprise win for Sean Pean and The Guide’s first mistake of the evening!

Actor in a supporting role

Result: Fantastic, the right result. Ledger wins a rare posthumous Oscar.

Actress in a leading role

We rather wanted Angelina Jolie to win. Not because her performance was tangibly better than the other nominees but simply because she is a great actress and this is too often overlooked amidst all the fascination about her private life. Having said this, we predicted that Kate Winslet would win for her technically perfect performance in The Reader.

Result: Kate Winslet picks up her first Oscar and The Guide clocks up its second correct prediction of the night!

Actress in a supporting role

Result: The Guide is unmasked as nothing but a charlatan, an amateur when it comes to making Oscar predictions. Penelope Cruz skips off stage clutching her Oscar as we sit quietly, tail between legs.

Directing

Result: As The Guide – and pretty much everyone else – expected, the award went to Danny Boyle.

Best picture

d that Slumdog Millionaire would nab it.

Result: Yes, no great surprises here: Slumdog wins and The Guide clocks up its fourth correct prediction of the night.

So, four out of six isn’t that bad but we won’t be giving up our day jobs anytime soon. Join us next year when we’ll once again demonstrate that The Guide knows very little indeed about making Oscar predictions. Tinseltown!? Go figure…

Our editor-in-chief, the self-proclaimed "greatest wit, raconteur and bon vivant of our age", borders on delusional. Over the years, The Fool has squandered more money on fast cars, Swiss watches and electronic gadgetry of all kinds than he – or his bank manager – cares to remember. Come nightfall, he can invariably be found stumbling out of Dukes mumbling “just one more Martini; I could have handled just one mmmmm… [thud!]”
