The depths of Rolex blue

By , published on 8 July 2009

There is a very particular blue that haunts the watch world, folks.

While many brands proffer dull and dim shades of predictable blues, there is one interpretation that stands head and shoulders above the crowd: rich, penetrating and oh-so inviting, we are speaking of the lapis-lazuli dials created by our old friend, Rolex. It is also known as an ultramarine, a fitting descriptive indeed.

The crying shame is that these dials found themselves ensconced in the yellow gold/steel and yellow gold Submariner models with nary a thought given to the most elegant setting of all: stainless steel.

Now, we know that a blue-dialed limited Japan-only edition was produced, but have yet to see images of sufficient quality to know whether the lapis dials were used.

So, aside from fleeting considerations of the yellow gold Sub – which would have to be worn against tanned skin sandwiched between the blues of the Greek ocean and sky in a pre-market crash world – what’s an interested fellow to do? How can one straddle the awkward line that separates mechanical elegance and the brashness of gawdy time-hookers?

We happened upon a solution that while not ideal – in that this is an older generation yellow gold Sub whose hour “nipples”, ahem, don’t entirely seduce us – points to the most convincing attempt to get that lapis on our wrist.

We’ll let the pics do the talking, but surely the idea of a blue NATO strap is the best means to compensate for the brashness of the gold while letting the ultramarine carry us away to uncharted waters.

We’re sold and we thank wannabuyawatch.com from LA for showing us the way.

He’s our resident fanatic: he relished detailing his BMW M3 for two full days at a time before crashing it at Eau Rouge in the wet; he spends insane amounts on his home-cinema system and has thrown tens of thousands of euros at vintage Rolex sports watches. The little fool simply does not understand the concept of restraint or the meaning of excess. He also – following a legendary "heavy" lunch – once nibbled (yes, like little dogs do) a dear lady friend of ours.
