Matte black cars: Trailer park or Hyde park?
By The Prodigal Fool, published on 14 July 2009
We won’t lie to you dear readers, the idea of a car – any car – covered with a matte paint job used to sound pretty tasteless to us: the kind of thing only the less discerning car fan would ever consider. But then a funny thing happened. Over the last few weeks we’ve been noticing more and more exotics being driven around our little corner of West London sporting this type of paint job.
First it was a cheeky 911 Turbo that looked more like a stealth bomber, then we spotted a Ferrari 599 that made us forget all about Ferrari Rosso Corsa, and the other day, a vicious Audi R8 looking better than ever having lost its gloss. That’s right, all of them looked great.
So, we’ve started thinking: Has the matte paint job made the transition from trailer park to Hyde park?
The photos below are all from Caton’s space on Loqu. Head on over there for more thoughts on this issue.

Ahem…thanks for spotting my…eh..’typo’ on every single instance of the word “matte”. An old dyslexic fool like me really shouldn’t be allowed near a keyboard. Now fixed in the post.
But back to the debate: from your comments, I’d say you haven’t seen many of these paint jobs in the…paint. In real life, they honestly can be pretty nice.

Please allow me to correct you, dearest old fool: I have seen these finishes before and observe they seriously “flatten” the aesthetics and styling of the car involved.
Now, that’s OK with a vicious wedge-shaped animal like a Lambo, but plain wrong on anything else.

They are actually complete vinyl wraps, very applied by some very talented people. They cost anything upwards of £1500, but a greatly cheaper than a full re-spray.
Have a look as this video of a , quite remarkable!

Fasinating video. Thanks for sharing.
I’m seeing more and more exotics on the streets of London with this finish and I have to say I really rather like them. Not sure I’d do it to my own car though…

Shoulda stayed in the trailer park, let alone being pranced around London!
A deadly Lambo Reventon is the only possible road car to be able to pull this matte (!) paint job off. And that’s because it’s an explosion of a car named after a rather dangerous ol’ bull that specialised in goring the arrogant fools who dared to get in the ring with him…
