Recession be damned

If you haven’t yet done so, you need to head on over to Evo to check out their coverage from the Frankfurt motor show. For our money Mercedes’ new Gullwing, the SLS AMG, is the stand out (those doors, those doors…) but it’s a close call. Lots to admire and drool over.

Recession be damned

Yes, we’re in the middle of the worst global recession for half a century. But it seems that no one remembered to tell the German carmakers. Thank God. If you haven’t yet done so, you need to head on over to Evo to check out their coverage from the Frankfurt motor show. For our money [...]

It appears there’s something else the German car makers forgot (particularly Mercedes): if you’re going to blatantly plunder your heritage for ideas then for God’s sake, make sure you deliver something of substance.

So, what does the SLS give us? A frightening grouping of well-worn design elements, desperate and blind stabs at modernity all put together with nary a thought for the cohesiveness and uttery beauty that marked previous Gullwings.

Seriously, I love the engine and associated performance but cannot stomach yet another MB exterior hack-job that reeks of design-by-committee. This does no-one but drug dealers and tasteless “exclusive” car collectors any favours.

Mercedes, listen closely: if you cannot improve on, or deliver a suitably styled modern-day equivalent of, your 1955 300SL Gullwing then please leave well enough alone!
