A Prodigal November

By , published on 1 December 2009

Here’s our monthly roundup of what we’ve been writing and you’ve been reading. The top ten most popular posts in November were:

Number 10 – Pizza East: This is not an Italian restaurantIn which Patito visits Shoreditch’s latest opening: a “not Italian”  pizza restaurant. She’s charmed by the friendly staff but finds teething problems.

At number 9 – Still ugly but you have to admire it: Rolex Deepsea In which we begrudgingly admit that, much as we dislike its vulgar styling, there’s still a lot to admire in Rolex’s behemoth diving watch.

At number 8 – Left-handed Rolex Sea-Dweller From the vulgarity of the Deepsea at number 9 to the restrained elegance of the Sea-Dweller. Here we uncover a left-handed Sea-Dweller. Elegant and rare, this has all the makings of a Prodigal watch.

At number 7 – Three ways to spend £1,200 on a vintage watchIn which we respond to a question from one of our Twitter followers. In suggesting three ways to spend £1,200 on a vintage watch, we uncover a couple of potential bargains and also explain the three criteria we tend to apply to any watch purchase.

At number 6 – Bond and Rolex: The story of a tumultuous but long-lasting love affairIn which we provide links to a few very interesting posts about the relationships between Bond and Rolex as well as current Bond Daniel Craig’s personal choice of timepieces.

At number 5 – Nokia E75: A tangible step up from the E71 but it’s marred by quality problems In which we love the many enhancements that the E75 QWERTY slider business phone enjoys over the E71 but bemoan the corners Nokia has cut on quality.

At number 4 – Biggest dog on the road? Porsche Panamera or BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo? In which we bemoan the styling jobs that BMW and Porsche have applied to the 5 Series Gran Turismo and Panamera respectively. Two great drives ruined by the stylists. There’s a poll here two so click on through to find out which of the two is emerging as the biggest dog.

At number 3 – Omega’s new Liquidmetal Seamaster Planet Ocean continues the brand’s impressive renaissance In which we salute the gorgeous new Planet Ocean from Omega, a limited edition model designed to show off the firm’s new Liquidmetal technology. We don’t understand the science but love the results.

At number 2 – Pure watch pornography: Jake’s Rolex Watch Blog In which we use one little word in the title that seems to be consistently pulling in high numbers of visitors from the search engines. We’re baffled.

And the most popular post of November…

At number 1 – Why the N86 is the best phone Nokia currently makes - No doubt greatly boosted in the rankings by a mention in Symbian-Guru’s own post about the N86, this post in which we explain why we think the N86 is Nokia’s best device continues to rack up the hits. At a time when most devices are trying so desperately to be all things to all people. the N86 holds its focus and genuinely excels in one or two key areas. We’re not saying it’s for everyone but anyone who values image or video capture in their device shouldn’t look anywhere else.

Our editor-in-chief, the self-proclaimed "greatest wit, raconteur and bon vivant of our age", borders on delusional. Over the years, The Fool has squandered more money on fast cars, Swiss watches and electronic gadgetry of all kinds than he – or his bank manager – cares to remember. Come nightfall, he can invariably be found stumbling out of Dukes mumbling “just one more Martini; I could have handled just one mmmmm… [thud!]”
