Welcome to #NokiaNav week in a Porsche 911 Carrera S
By The Prodigal Fool, published on 10 May 2010
OK look, if you’d like, we could pretend that it was just another week here at Prodigal Towers. But guess what? It’s not and we won’t! Yesterday the good folks at Nokia delivered a….a….a….Porsche 911 to our door and handed us the keys. Excited? Oh yeah you could say that!
But wait, we almost forgot: on board, Nokia has installed its latest navigation and phone integration equipment. What’s that? You want to know how the Nokia car kit is performing? Ah…. Oops…
Truth is, we haven’t even bothered to pay any attention to it yet. We’ve been a little too busy tearing up our little corner of South West London in our new 911.
So, first impressions: here’s what first struck us when we started thinking about slamming down our own hard-earned cash on one of Stuttgart’s finest steeds:
- The ride is harsh. No, really harsh. Even after you’ve disabled the sports mode (yes, our 911 came with the Sports Chrono package, complete with lap timer on the dash) the suspension shakes you around far more than is reasonable.
- The cabin belongs in a Skoda. Seriously, some of the plastics used in the interior – note particularly the centre console and the interior door handles – belong in a much, much lesser car. Actually they don’t belong in a car at all. No one who’s spent money on a vehicle deserves this: they belong in a bubble gum pack, that’s about all they’re good for. Oh, and 3rd…
- The 911 is absolutely, unequivocally, without a second’s hesitation, the best sports car we’ve driven (and we’ve driven a few!) Precise, powerful, and – most important of all to these Prodigal eyes – classic. No other car on the planet combines so fiercely and so efficiently the two key elements of a desirable car: effortlesss high-performace and a cool, detached sense of history and respectful evolution. No doubt about it, the 911 is the quintessential sports car.
#NokiaNav? Oh yes, that’s important too and we’ll be reporting on it all this week here on The Guide. But, honestly, it’s going to take a lot – a HELL of a lot – to distract us from the 911: THE Prodigal sports car. No excuses or alternatives: this is it.

Haha, you know that the interior of Skoda’s are practically identical to all Volkswagens so it’s kinda a ridulous statement to make!
-
Fair point! The Skoda interior is probably better made than the 911.

Well its all part of the VAG family. I’ll definitely talk to you more about your thoughts on Fri . The TT-S is practically identical to my own car inside so there was no ‘surprised’ when it came to the cabin, which is pretty tight. Its not really ever about the cabin though with a 911 as you say, thats the cherry. Beautiful drives.
