Fabulous and flirty at Dean Street Townhouse
By Patito, published on 2 June 2010
When you have a hot date in London town, you need to pick somewhere special. And in a city where you’re spoilt for choice, that could be any number of places. But for Mr Fling’s visit to London one venue stood out: the oh-so-cool Dean Street Townhouse in the heart of Soho. Owned by the group behind Soho House (and its sister Shoreditch House), Dean Street Townhouse is a 39 bedroom hotel and all-day dining room in a four-storey Georgian townhouse opposite the Groucho Club. Opened in November 2009, the restaurant has appeared on every London ‘what’s hot’ list. In the last six months restaurant reviewers have been falling over themselves to try it out, not once, not twice, but up to three times (just to ensure they try absolutely everything on the menu). We were desperate to go and Mr Fling provided the perfect excuse.
We booked a table for 9.30pm on a balmy Friday night. A 2-minute walk from Tottenham Court Road tube station (oh yes, the tourist insisted on travelling by tube), we walked up to what was once a Pitcher & Piano and pushed the door open. It’s difficult to describe what a buzz feels like, but Dean Street Townhouse definitely has one. The dining room combines vintage armchairs, hard wooden floors, and cut glass chandeliers. It feels old yet young, new yet established. There’s a long wooden bar as you walk in and that’s where we spent our first 20 minutes, sipping a prosecco as we waited for our table. The clientele was uber cool; young gay couples, Lady Gaga lookalikes, groups of New Yorkers, first dates. And then there was us. A second date filled with anticipation. We were loving it. And as Mr Fling leant in for a kiss, we like to think he was too.
Once seated in a cosy corner of the banquette tables, we chose the Anglesey sea bass with sea shore herbs at £21 (which was delightful) and Mr Fling the (very random) salt beef, caraway dumplings and pickle at £16.50. We’d love to tell you what the wine was, but Mr Fling ordered and we never saw the bill. All we know is that it was white, Italian and delicious. A bit like Mr Fling really.
To follow, we opted for the steamed treacle sponge with custard (to share) at £12. How could we resist? It was the sweeetest, most decadent thing we’d ever eaten. When it came to coffees, Mr Fling had his usual espresso (“why do they keep asking if I want a double?!”) and we had a perfectly prepared espresso Martini. Mr Fling was skeptical about this choice (“you’re a nation of alcoholics”, he teased) but on balance, we think he maybe liked it. In any event, it ensured we had the right level of energy for the next venue. But we won’t be sharing that story with you here.
Dean Street Townhouse is a fabulous place for a fabulous evening. Thoroughly recommended.
