A man, a machine, a road: Senna and the Monaco run
By Straight-Six, published on 27 July 2010
We’re more often amused than inspired by Top Gear but last night’s episode reminded us of a little clip that has been lying dormant on our hard drive for over seven years now; one that’s too inspiring and awesome not to share with our two Prodigal fans.
The turbo-charged 1,200hp Formula 1 monsters of yesteryear were the most ferocious beasts ever produced, barring the mind-boggling Group B rally cars. Possessing inadequate amounts of down-force, manual gearboxes and enough power to shrivel spectators’ privates (let alone the pilots’), the turbo Formula 1 steeds truly separated the men from the boys. Until boys became the sport’s de facto heroes, that is!
Anyways, everything that can be said about Ayrton Senna and his god-given talent as a driver has been said, so we won’t add anything further except to state that sometimes, just sometimes, a man aligns with a machine and a track and gives us a display that is truly divine. We shared Ari Vatanen pounding Pike’s Peak with you, but what follows is just as noteworthy – perhaps more so.
Enough chat. Here is the legendary Ayrton Senna on a qualifying lap at the 1988 (we believe?) Monaco Grand Prix in his McLaren Honda. Due to some bloody copyright restriction, we weren’t able to share the original video with the divine engine in full roar and Ayrton piping in at the end about pushing the limit and flying very high. So, the next best things is the sale video but with a rather crap soundtrack. Hey, it was the best we could do!
You can indeed fly very high, folks…

That’s weird, Jethro. I just tried it and it works perfectly. Care to try again and let us know?
Thanks.

Video is blocked for me too.

Ayrton was and always will be the best open wheel driver (F1, Indy, Cart, etc) of all time. When he passed the sport lost a true champion. I have read that his funeral procession had more people lining the streets than the precession for Pope John Paul I (the first, not the second).

Yes, looks like the powers that be at Formula 1 didn’t take too kindly to us sharing that with you.
Oh well, here’s Plan B: you’re all invited to Straight-Six’s place to watch it on his MacBook Pro. Just bring your own drinks please…
