Forget the name and the MC Heritage: The Tudor Glamour Double Date

By , published on 7 September 2010

Right, let’s clear up two things straight from the get-go: we’re now genuinely split on the Tudor Monte Carlo Heritage and it turns out there’s another model in the recently revitalised Tudor line-up that may just be more deserving of your attention. Though it does sport one of the most guffaw-inducing names we’ve yet come across: the Glamour Double Date.

Frankly, we could spend our entire post taking the piss out of what sounds like a Marie Claire editorial about chicks and hicks, but we won’t. Cause we’re grown up and stuff. Instead we’d like to take a moment to share where we are on one of the hottest watches of the moment before closing the door on the MC Heritage and strolling over to the quiet corner table where the Glamour Double Date is ever-so quietly conveying the Right Stuff.

The Tudor MC Heritage is all anyone can talk about these days. An online mate of ours (@FHKJ on Twitter) bought one and has been deliriously happy, wielding it as a chick magnet wherever he goes. We’ve tussled with Hodinkee about the crappy movement inside the MC Heritage and the value-for-money angle, while the mystics on the revered Vintage Rolex Forum have largely crucified it with the original Monte Carlo – claiming nothing beats the real deal. Straight-Six agrees with the latter while the Prodigal Fool doesn’t.

In the end, the MC Heritage will make many happy with its fab design, price and heritage, while enthusiasts will piss on the movement and lament the fact that Tudor can’t do anything novel other than reissue what is already a fantastic classic timepiece. In other words: come up with something new, Tudor. And we’ll not say another word on the matter.

Well, turns out Tudor have actually produced a very pleasing little model (well, it actually measures 42mm – yet again!) that appears to offer something genuinely classic without dredging up too much of the vintage design catalogue. The Glamour Double Date may sport a truly silly name but with the right dial and strap configuration, well, it comes into its own as a serious, simple and classy affair.

We adore unembellished watch design done right. There’s nothing more satisfying than leaving your eye to wander over a case, dial and hands without tripping up over the over-blown or shambolic design bits that plague so many timepieces. They say eye-catching, but nothing should impede you from there on in.

And we think the Glamour Double Date has that special something going for it. That grey dial is by far the most sophisticated of the bunch and the leaf hands without fill lighten the load and provide balance to the hefty case. The details of the seconds sub-dial intrigue, given the concentric circles that sprout a rose inspired by the logo on early Tudor models, and the date is actually visible for once! All the usual goodies (mechanical movement, domed sapphire crystal, waterproof to bathtub depths, etc.) are all present and accounted for.

And the price? From our research we believe it to be around the $2,000 point. Most reasonable and presenting a far better value proposition than the MC Heritage we both hate and adore. Crap. We mentioned it again!

He’s our resident fanatic: he relished detailing his BMW M3 for two full days at a time before crashing it at Eau Rouge in the wet; he spends insane amounts on his home-cinema system and has thrown tens of thousands of euros at vintage Rolex sports watches. The little fool simply does not understand the concept of restraint or the meaning of excess. He also – following a legendary "heavy" lunch – once nibbled (yes, like little dogs do) a dear lady friend of ours.

“Glamour Double Date”? Sounds like something I might pay a great deal of money for if I were a lonely single gentleman on a business trip and fancied some exotic ‘company’.
