Oh yes, it’s ladies night! And Marvin serves the drinks…
By Straight-Six, published on 10 September 2010
We really can be a self-centered, narcissistic, self-indulgent, profligate bunch! And yes, I’m talking about us watch enthusiasts who, for the majority, are men.
Just when was it that we stopped noticing the decreasing amount of physical, emotional or even mental response from our significant other as we pontificate at length on the various attributes of a vintage Breitling 806, Rolex 6536/1 or why the Explorer and Explorer II are the only two watches worth a shit in the current Rolex line-up. Their eyeballs don’t even glaze over anymore, gents. They almost appear to not even be breathing…
So, in a bid to recognise our darlings and shake things up in the macho horological love-fest we keep 24/7, we turned to our good friends at Marvin. And we issued them with a challenge, bastards that we are: could they get the hard-nose, no-bullshit Finnish spouse of Straight-Six to stop wearing her beloved Rolex Air King for 2 weeks and instead sport something a little more feminine from the Marvin line-up?
With great credit to our main man Jerome Pineau at Marvin, he pulled through by sending us the Marvin M111.72.72.82, an intriguing ladies-sized watch (33mm diameter) that sports the usual mother-of-pearl dial and diamond-pimpled bezel bling, but also has an open heart dial.
Well, the watch has been worn non-stop since arriving last week and there are already signs it is working its way under Mrs. Six’s translucent skin.
But while we write down the 5-6 words she utters on the subject of the Marvin once every two days in an attempt to bring you at least a one-paragraph review, we thought we’d share some early pics with you.
And remember: don’t forget your ladies’ wrists too…!
P.S. The images of the Marvin were taken with Straight-Six’s spanking new Canon S90 Powershot, of which he is irrationally and fiercely proud. Post to follow.

My good friend, it certainly sounds as if you’ve been taking care of your lady’s wrists. But good!
Does she now listen to you patiently…?

Thank you Mrs. Six. Hope to see pictures of you wearing the “diams” 111 as well!

NanT has a steel sport Breitling, a Cartier tank, a vintage men’s AP with a jeweled bezel. I gave her a men’s 1919 tortue shaped PP but she gave it back, so I wear it (it’s a beaut, but it takes a real man to wear a 27mm watch!). All were offerred out of guilt and an attempt to inspire a shared passion. But the one that provokes a crinkly-eyed smile to anyone who comments – with an invitation to inspect it off her wrist – is one she found herself; the all-white Sandra Bullock Toy Watch from “Blindside”. $300. Perfect.

A great woman in a good hands of a great man
cheers to you-
A great man is certainly not the way Straight-Six has EVER been described before.
Oh, wait, he’s the great woman? Oh, OK, I get you…

[...] mentioned in the preview of the Marvin M111.72.72.82, the bigger picture here was the inherent selfish nature of our pursuit [...]

Must admit that La Noodle also rolls her eyes at my horological meanderings and general watchnerd-timegeekery. So I found her something vintage to wear – a rather nice, gold-rolled, blue steeled handed Smiths DeLuxe with sub-seconds. That then led to a ladies Tudor Rose and a diamond-encrsuted Hamilton cocktail watch. All manual. All vintage. Not sure what’s next, but will look at the Marvins!
