One year since Apple announced the iPad
By The Prodigal Fool, published on 27 January 2011
Feels longer than that right? Well, no, it was just 12 short months ago today that Steve Jobs took to the stage to announce the product that – with hindsight – we would now regard as more important than the all-conquering iPhone.
Initial responses to the iPad were mixed. Many thought the iPad revolutionary but others – including poor Steve Ballmer of Microsoft – dismissed it as irrelevant, a solution to a problem that didn’t exist. Here at The Guide, the imminent arrival of the iPad prompted us to reflect on how great the MacBook Air is. After spending some time with it, we were smitten just like everyone else. That’s not to say we didn’t have reservations – we did – but, Hell, we love our iPad.
And everyone else seems to too. By the end of 2010, Apple had sold almost 15 million iPads in just 10 months of sales and kicked off a revolution in portable computing, not to mention digital publishing and advertising.
So, on this anniversary, we’d like to salute the iPad by taking you down memory lane with the iPad announcement from Apple’s YouTube channel. The first part is below. The lead up to the first mention of the iPad starts about 8 minutes into the clip.

Stuart, I admire your optimism, but I doubt that even 3rd gen iPad will satisfy everyone. Apple has a knack for leaving one or more things out — no camera(s) on iPad, no backlit keyboard on current Air, no camera(s) on iPod Touch 1G through 3G, lame low-res camera on iPod Touch 4G, etc.
P.S. I own iPod Touch 3G and 4G.

Just watched this on the said device, which, after a brief testing period, became my sole personal means of doing all this electronic witchery. While it is a compromise, it has so far proved to be one worth making. I think I’m looking forward to, say, the third generation, by which time it should be damn near perfect.
