What Time Is It, you fools?
By Jérome Pineau, published on 10 June 2011
Last week we asked the question, “what kind of fool would come on this show?” – and the answer turned out to be: one kind – the Prodigal kind that is. Your gracious editors The Prodigal Fool and Straight-Six created The Prodigal Guide in 2007 and have since managed to build an original, compelling and entertaining platform. How do they do it?
By judiciously mixing entertainment with high-quality content. As Hemingway once said, “write drunk; edit sober” – advice the fools keep taking seriously article after article. And that’s a refreshing approach in the rather formal watch industry. They may not take themselves very seriously, but behind the curtain of self-deprecating humor and jocularity lies real journalistic professionalism and deep knowledge of the luxury industry with a focus on horology.
In our interview, we talked about their background, how they met in school at the age of 12, their passion for watches, their honest, no-nonsense and opinionated approach to reporting, how to mix watch reviews with stale Tequila, viewer statistics, and a new revenue model based on the old-fashioned concept of patrons of the arts that has yet to make them rich. (Quite the opposite. I’m on the run from Amex – Ed.) But that’s OK because at least they’re famous, and having a total blast in the process!
And you will too after listening to these guys for 30 mins. During that short time we manage to talk about Rolex (thanks to a caller from Dubai), Jaeger-LeCoultre, Hublot (of course), Marvin, and Zenith CEO Dufour’s amazing hair (blame the white wine I’m told…)
If you missed the episode, no problem: You can listen to the recording right here. Not familiar with ‘What Time Is It?’ Radio? Find out more here.
