What Time Is It, IWC?
By Jérome Pineau, published on 1 July 2011
Most people might not know who Michael Friedberg is, but if Martians finally land and ask the hundreds of IWC collectors out there to “take them to their leader”, they’ll promptly be introduced to this handsome and mild-mannered attorney from Chicago.
Why? Because Michael had been growing and moderating the IWC collector forum since 2001 – and this tribe of die-hard IWC experts worships him. And rightly-so. He’s been taking good care of them over the years, and significantly growing the community in the past decade.
In this week’s show, we talked to Michael about the origins of the forum; IWC’s surprising success at digital and social media; what makes collectors tick; how to blend real and virtual events; IWC’s young CEO Georges Kern; the benefits of collector evangelism for a luxury watch brand (and how to gauge its success); and female collectors (yes, they do exist!).
In the 30 minutes of friendly horology chit-chat we enjoyed with him, Michael – one of very few ‘official’ brand forum managers – gave us some phenomenal insight into the world of IWC.
